Do you suspect abuse?
When talking to someone you suspect is being abused, first develop a friendship and trust with that person. Make sure he or she feels comfortable with you; be supportive. See if you can get details on what happened in a friendly conversation.
Ask encouraging questions. See if he or she will tell you how they got the bruise on their body. Try not to interrupt him or her. Do not probe too much – just gather information and then report it to the police. Make sure the person knows they do not deserve this abuse and they do deserve respect. After you get all the details, talk about something nice.
Remember – no one of any age deserves abuse. Be a caring citizen and report any suspected abuse. It is better to be safe than sorry.
