An investigation by the Seattle Times – “seniors for sale”
The Seattle Times recently reported that, “The State of Washington has serious flaws in their adult family home system.” The article said that there are close to 3,000 homes that care for more than 10,000 elderly adults. Investigators reviewed 15 years of reports filed by the Department of Social and Health Services, which ignored abuse, neglect complaints, and falsified medical records.
The article also stated, “Thousands of seniors have been exploited by profiteers or harmed by caregivers.” It continued to say that new owners of these elderly facilities did not meet the requirements to run an establishment of this kind; they did not have the proper training or no training at all.
Washington Health Care Association said that the Department of Social and Health Services does not properly look into these nursing homes. They reported that owners have no problem charging high monthly fees and then cutting meals, providing little heat if any, and changing the residents daily. It is sad how so many people have no problem making money off the elderly today without properly taking care of them.
